Peru trips

I arrive to Peru in December for 10 days. I will be happy with any tips on how to organize the trip. Do I need to book everything beforehand? Any suggestions on our operators. I want something inexpensive.
If I cannot book the trip can I travel by myself on buses or trains buying tickets locally?
