Just make sure you get a tri-band phone as it will work in many countries but remember to check with your home countries provider first to check that the have coverage in your destination country (most have partnerships, so for example if there is no Vodafone you can use NTT or whatever).

Yeah, good call.

It's probably best to get to make sure your phone is unlocked too... a lot cheaper to buy a local sim card than to be roaming with your home network.

Yer but if clients need to contact you, you kinda need the same number Sad I have heard that in some countries you can hire a mobile phone from the airport.... thought that was a good idea Smiley

When I was in Thailand in 2006 I used a local sim and just checked my voicemail regularly. I don't tend to have clients phoning me though.

With the right phone, maybe a Skype-in number would be a good way to go - pay for data at local rates, but have a portable number.

At the mo, I think Windows Mobile is probably the best bet for VOIP... but I can't wait until Android is around - Google & co. have gotta be better than being slave to another temperamental M$ OS!

I think hiring a mobile phone from the airport will always be the best idea.
Also I think most of the wireless providers come with international roaming. !

Hiring a phone does sound like a good idea, as long as you leave by the same airport! The problem with roaming is that it is so expensive, you usually have to pay to receive calls and texts as well as make them and if you use your phone for data, expect a big bill when you get back!
